Berhampur: Miscreants allegedly looted gold and diamond jewellery from a woman after identifying themselves as cops in Berhampur town today.

The victim, identified as Sanjukta Padhi was on morning walk when she was way laid by four bike borne miscreants in wee hours today near Sitadevi Khadanga Girls’ hostel.

According to reports, the youths advised Padhi to remove the jewellery she was wearing and asked her to keep it in safe custody in view of recent loot cases in the town. Later, they snatched gold and diamond jewellery weighing 150 grams that Padhi had kept in her vanity.

“At around 6.10 am, a Hindi speaking man approached and asked to come to his colleagues waiting in two other motorcycles. They identified themselves as police personnel. One of them asked me to keep all the jewellery in safe custody. Convinced by their suggestions, I started taking out my gold chain, rings and other jewellery which was subsequently snatched by the miscreants who immediately fled the spot,” said Padhi while narrating her ordeal.

Following the incident, police have started investigation basing on the complaint filed by the victim.

“A case has been registered at Town police station. Already teams have been formed to nab the accused involved in the loot. The involvement of an inter-State criminal gang is suspected while further investigation is on,” said a senior police official.
