Kendrapara: A portion of an under-construction railway line of new Paradip-Haridaspur rail project caved in near the canal bridge at Goseinbandha village under Marshaghai block of Kendrapara district Wednesday night.

Though there were no casualties reported in the mishap, at least three families residing some 50 metres away from the railway line were rendered homeless.

Reports said, around 200-metre-long stretch of the railway line caved in around 20-feet deep damaging two houses situated near the railway line.

Informed, officials of Railway reached the spot and inspected the situation.

“We were sleeping inside our houses when we heard a loud sound and rushed out to see what had happened. We saw a portion of the railway line cave in in towards our houses and we ran for life with our family members. We are forced to live outside as we fear a bigger mishap if we stay inside. We had given our land to the administration for the railway project and now we neither have a land nor house,” said a villager whose house suffered damage in the mishap.

Another villager who also lost his property in the incident said, “I had given around 1 acre of land for the railway line and build a house with the compensation money. Now the debris of the mishap filled my pond and farmland. Neither any administrative officials have come nor have we received any assistance yet.”

“My house has developed cracks due to which we are forced to stay outside since last night. My matric examination is just five days away and I cannot study in this situation,” said a girl.

The locals also alleged that the mishap occurred due to substandard work of the under-construction railway line.

It may be noted that the 82-kilometre-long Paradip-Haridaspur railway was taken up in 1998 and the State Government has been trying to complete the project since 2009.
