Cuttack: Three police officials including two constables were placed under suspension in connection with the alleged assault on a lawyer in Cuttack.

Informing the development, Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Akhilesvar Singh today informed that three police personnel have been suspended for 'police excess'.

“From preliminary investigation, we have found police excess in the incident and considering it as gross misconduct, three police officials-Havildar PK Behera, Constables DK Samal, OAPF constable UK Bhuyan. Another Home Guard Kishor Jena has been served one-month notice seeking an explanation as to why no action will be taken against him,” said Singh said at a presser.

Earlier on Tuesday, some police officials had thrashed a lawyer in Nayabazar area leading to outrage in the city. Following the incident, a mob set fire to a police vehicle parked near the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC)’s office.

The situation turned ugly as police conducted a flag march protesting the incident. Against such move, lawyers staged a road blockade near Chauliaganj.

Condemning the incident, Orissa High Court Bar Association is observing a two-day cease work. The State Bar Council has also extended support to the cease-work agitation called by the lawyers.

Coming down heavily on the police over the incident, HC Bar Association Secretary, Satyabrata Mohanty on Wednesday informed that the lawyers would unanimously boycott the proceedings of the court for two days.

The lawyers condemned the incident and demanded stringent action against the erring police officials, who are involved in this brutal incident,” said Mohanty

Terming the incident as unfortunate, Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty had ordered Crime DCP to conduct enquiry and supervision into the incident.
