Puri: The Pipili bypoll has been postponed following the untimely demise of Congress candidate Ajit Mangaraj who succumbed due to COVID-19 infection on Wednesday.

The Puri Additional District Magistrate (ADM) in the evening announced the postponement of the bypoll and said that a copy of the postponement letter has been sent to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Chief Election Officer (CEO), Odisha for consideration.

Mangaraj was earlier tested positive for the virus and was undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospitals in Bhubaneswar.

Later in the day, mortal remains of the Congress leader was consigned to flames at Satyanagar crematorium in the Capital city.

The crucial Pipili bypoll, which was necessitated following the demise of BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy, was scheduled to be held on April 17.
