Puri: Amid the fast deteriorating law and order situation in Pipli ahead of the crucial bypoll,  BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra on Monday accused the Odisha Police of becoming an obstacle on the way of free and fair elections in the assembly constituency.

“BJD is hell-bent not to conduct the forthcoming bypoll in a free and fair manner . The ruling party is aided by the Odisha Police to suppress the voice of the opposition. Altogether, they are trying to create a state of terror and fear in the Assembly segment,” alleged Patra.

” Many criminals including Dhirendra Samantray, Raja and Sanjay Samantray with pending non-bailable warrants against them have been let loose and are campaigning for the ruling party candidate,” said Patra while showing photographs of BJD leaders with a number of wanted offenders.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the Odisha assembly, Pradipta Naik targeted the Odisha Police for failing to nab notorious gangster Sheikh  Hyder who staged a dramatic escape from his guarded ward at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Saturday.

“Police are still clueless about the whereabouts of Hyder even 36 hours of his escape under doubtful circumstances. However, they are harassing the innocent BJP workers in Pipili. Naveen Patnaik’s government in the State is a assembly of hooligans and criminals,” said Naik.

In a major development, as many as three companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) along with 29 platoons of Odisha Special Armed Police (OSAP) and one platoon of Swift Action Force have been deployed for the forthcoming bypoll scheduled on April 17.

“In order to maintain law and order in the constituency, the entire area has been divided into several zones. Two Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASPs) and three Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSPs) have been deployed to make a full proof arrangement to handle law and order situation in the area,” said Director General of Police (DGP) Abhay.
