Bhubaneswar: The State Congress on Sunday claimed that Odisha government succumbed to the pressure mounted by the party on the Pari murder case. The government’s decision to go for a probe by High Court monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) is the historic victory for the Congress, said senior leader and Odisha in-charge of Congress, Dr A Chella Kumar.

Addressing a press conference, Kumar said, “We had told categorically that if at all an inquiry takes place on the brutal murder of ‘Pari’, the five year-old girl from Nayagarh district, it should be under the supervision of a High Court judge or else the Minister should resign. It was this stand of Congress party which forced the Odisha government to come forward and announce a court monitored SIT probe. It was a historic victory for the Congress.”

Kumar however stated that the approach of Odisha government has sown the seeds of doubts in the minds of people in the State.

The senior Congress leader took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had earlier alleged that Congress MLAs were 'managed' due to which they remained silent during Odisha Assembly on the Pari issue.

"The Congress is ready to face any kind of probe or debate with the BJP on the issue whether the Congress is hand in gloves with the BJD or it is the BJP which is having nexus with the ruling party, he said.

“The BJD and BJP are the two sides of a coin. Both the parties have a secret pact in looting the resources of Odisha. I was told that a high profile administrative officer, who is running the show in the State, already has a secret pact with Amit Shah’s son in looting the resources of Odisha. Both BJD and BJP are trying to keep away

Congress party from the State of Odisha so that they can loot and exploit the people here,” said Kumar.

Senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra said "Our ultimate demand was High Court monitored SIT and it was accepted by the State government. So after the development we had to ensure that the House functioned normally. The Congress has always tried to corner the State government in House on several issues including Puri and custodial deaths.

Mishra further said that the Congress has been demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister on the issue.

“The BJP is making all vague allegations. If they (BJP members) have guts, they should join us in demanding the CM’s resignation,” said Mishra.

Responding to Congress in-charge Chella Kumar’s allegations, Leader of the Opposition Pradipta Naik said, “CBI inquiry never stops. Once team reaches Naveen Patnaik’s door, it won't take much time for the probe agency to enter the house. In fact without looking at what is happening with others, I suggest Chella Kumar should set their own house, the Congress party in order first.”

On Kumar’s allegation of secret nexus between BJD and BJP, Naik said, “People of Odisha know the stand of Congress which is working hand-in-gloves with the BJD in Assembly. In Kunduli matter too, the Congress had opposed SIT and now the same party is patting its own back after government ordered SIT probe in Pari murder case,” alleged Naik.
