Bhubaneswar: The World Bank on Monday said it would provide financial assistance to the Odisha government to tackle urban flooding.
“Taking note of the Golden Triangle comprising Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri, there is a possibility of severe impact of urban flooding in these areas. If the state government gives more focus on urban flooding and its remedial measures, it will be good for the state”, Sourav Dani, Senior Disaster Management Specialist, World Bank, told OTV.
Stating that the Indonesian government has done a lot of works to curb urban flooding, which, he said, can be taken up by the Odisha government.
Referring to the cities like Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur which are prone to severe urban flooding during rainy season, Dani said the state government should take up measures in these cities to tide over the situation.
The World Bank team, during its visit to the state, reviewed the status of several ongoing projects, aided by the Bank, in the state on Monday.
The team visited Bhadrak district and dedicated a World Bank aided multi-purpose cyclone shelter at Kishmat Krushnapur village under Basudevpur block.
“The shelter will be immensely beneficial to us. During a cyclonic storm, we can take shelter along with their domestic pets at this centre. We can also store our food, books and other essential commodities inside this centre,” said Jyotshnarani Parida, a girl student of the village.
Praising the efforts of the state government in the successful tackling a series of natural calamities after the devastating Super Cyclone in 1999, Dani said, “We will project Odisha as a model in other states and countries with a message that it is possible to resist the natural disasters if the governments actively involve the community”.
The World Bank Coastal Mission Team on Friday arrived in the state to review the World Bank-funded projects, being executed in coastal districts of the State.
The team made a field visit of three projects- National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP), Additional NCRMP and Odisha Disaster Recovery Project (ODRP) and expressed satisfaction over the pace the work.
