Nabarangpur: In a major breakthrough, officials of Nabarangpur Forest Division on Monday night arrested five members of a poaching gang and seized six leopard skins and some body parts other wild animals from their possession.

Briefing the media here on Wednesday, Nabarangpur DFO, Swayam Mallick, said the Forest department had formed a special taskforce to nab the gang which was active in Nabarangpur Forest Division since last nine months.

“After constantly tracking the modus operandi of the gang, we traced its five members near Deopala dam area bordering Kalahandi district last night and arrested them,” the DFO informed.

The arrested have been identified as Sana Bisoyee, Kuna Nayak, Ranjan Sahu, Bhuban Nayak and Niranjan Nayak. Of the five arrested, four belong to Thuamul-Rampur area of Kalahandi district while another person belongs to Dasamanthapur area in Koraput district.

“We have seized six leopard skins, a bear paw, five bear nails, two bear teeth and five tiger teeth from the arrested persons who would be forwarded to the court tomorrow”, the DFO added.

He further said preliminary investigation has revealed that there are three more persons involved in the incident.

“As per the Wildlife Protection Act, leopard is a Schedule-1 animal. Animals coming under this category are given maximum protection,” the DFO pointed out.
