Bhubaneswar: Renowned poet and Kendra Sahitya Akademi Awardee Sourindra Barik passed away at a private hospital in the Odisha capital on Tuesday morning.
He was 79.
The noted poet was suffering from a prolonged illness and was recently admitted to a private hospital where he left for his heavenly abode in the early this morning, family sources said.
Following the news of his death, several distinguished personalities, friends, writers, poets and journalists rushed to his residence near Punama Gate near Bhimtangi to have a last glimpse of the departed soul.
Born in 1938 in Baripada of Mayurbhanj district, Sourindra took up teaching as his profession after completing his Master’s Degree in English and taught in various government colleges. He retired as the chairperson of Odisha State Bureau of Text Book Preparation and Production.
A prolific writer, Barik has authored several books and translated several books of other languages to Odia. He has also authored a number of publications on literary criticism.
Some of his noted publications are Samanya Kathan (1975), Upabharat (1984), Akasha Pari Nibida (1985), Gunugunu Chitrapata (1986), Luhathu Bi Antaranga (1989), Chahala Chhaire Ghadie, Anubharata (1990), Ame Duhein (1991), Padha Ba Napadha (1997), Maa, Aau Jaha Kahibaku Thila and Haladi Basanta.
He had won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award for Akasha Pari Nibida in 1988.
Apart from this, he had won the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award and Dharitri Award.
