Bhubaneswar: Sensing the gravity of the case following growing public outrage across the State and criticism from Opposition parties, the State government on Saturday said it has put the minor rape case in Jatni under the Red Flag category.
Police said a charge sheet in the case will be filed within 10 days.
Informing this to media, Police Commissioner RP Sharma said, “The case will be tried in a Fast Track court. If needed, a special public prosecutor will be appointed to deal with it. After recording the statement of the victim under Section 164 of CrPC, we will submit the chargesheet before the court within the next 10 days.”
The commissioner also informed that DNA test of the accused, which is required in such sensational case, will be conducted on the man.
Meanwhile, protesting against the heinous crime, the BJP today staged demonstrations in several parts of the State. The saffron party activists staged a sit-in in Angul and Sambalpur while rallies were taken out in Rayagada and Sundergarh protesting the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
Protests were also seen in Bhubaneswar where party workers took out a rally near Master Canteen square and burnt the effigy of chief minister Naveen Patnaik.
BJP President Basant Panda slammed the State Government claiming that women are unsafe and the law and order situation has deteriorated in the State.
Former minister and party’s senior leader Surama Padhi said, “Women in Odisha are completely unsafe and the government has no sympathy for them. The law and order situation has completely collpased. The State government must hand out exemplary punishment in the case.”
Already on back foot in the case for failing to act in time, the ruling party said the allegations are baseless.
“We hope the CM will take proper action against the culprits,” BJD spokesperson Sashibhusan Behera said.
On BJP’s State-wide protest, he said the party has every right to protest in a democracy.,
On Saturday chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced a Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the nine-year old girl, who was raped at Loko Colony in Jatni of Khurda district late on Wednesday night. The condition of the victim is now stable, doctors treating her at capital hospital said.
“The girl is undergoing treatment at the hospital’s one stop centre (Sakhi ward). A dedicated team, including surgery and gyaenic specialists, is observing her condition on an hourly basis. Her condition is stable,” Vinod Mishra, superintendent, Capital hospital, said.
