Bhubaneswar: The Narendra Modi-led NDA government on Thursday made the highest ever allocation for the State in 2016-17 railway budget presented by Railway minister Suresh Prabhu in the parliament.

Prabhu announced Rs 4,682 crore for Odisha, about 94% against it’s demand of Rs 5,000 crore.

The demand was made by the State for construction of new tracks, gauge conversion, doubling, boosting of passenger amenities, improving traffic facilities, safety and electrification.

In terms of allocations for the State’s railway sector, the Centre had provided 78.56 % (Rs 2514 crore) as against Rs 3200 crore demanded by the State in 2015-16 Railway Budget.

Similarly in2014-15, the State had received Rs 1420.98 cr, an allocation of 45% against its demand of Rs 3160 crore.

While presenting the budget, the Railway minister has proposed new lines for Jeypore-Malkangiri, Jeypore-Nabarangpur, Banshpani-Barbil, Berhampur-Sambalpur and Bandhamunda-Rourkela routes.

Prabhu has also proposed to declare Kharagpur-Vijayawada route as freight corridor.
