Bhubaneswar: Even as the maximum day temperature shot up over 35 degree Celsius in most parts of Odisha on Thursday, the Met department has warned of a gruelling summer this year.

Talking to OTV, director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu said; “During winter, the wind flow is usually from the north, north-east or north-north-east direction. The maximum temperature during winter remains around 32-33 degrees Celsius with a variation of 1-2 degree if the weather is clear. But this year, the wind flow during February is from the east, south-east or south-west direction. As a result, it carries water vapour from the sea to the land, which has helped the temperature go up”.

Stating that southern India is comparatively hotter than northern India, he said it has been observed that the northern part of the country did not have a prolonged winter this year.

“Besides, there is less wind flow from the northern region, which flows at a lower level up to a distance between 1.5 km and 2.1 km from the sea level,” he added.

Sahu also attributed less rainfall in Odisha to the abnormal rise in the temperature in the state.

“Since October, the state has not witnessed heavy rainfall as a result of which there is no moisture in the atmosphere to bring down the temperature,” he pointed out.

Asked whether the temperature would rise further in the next few days, Sahu said since Odisha has a long coastline, rise in temperature would help the wind flow the sea to the land.

“Besides, this will also raise the possibility of formation of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal or a trough line across the state, which will trigger rainfall in the state which normally takes place in February. Despite this, temperature would be over three degrees higher during the next three months till May due to the El Nino effect,” he observed.

According to a Met release this evening, Bhubaneswar recorded the highest 39.2 degrees in the state. Barring Daringbadi, Koraput, Puri, Gopalpur and Paradip where the temperature remained below 35 degrees, temperature in most places in the state remained above 35 degrees today.
