Paradip: The birth centenary of former chief minister Biju Patnaik will be celebrated in a grand manner here on March 5.

The Biju Memorial Trust, which has been celebrating the birthday of the late leader, informed newsmen today at a press meet here that the event will not be a party programme but solely a memorial meeting of Biju lovers.

Many national level leaders, Governor and chief minister of Odisha are scheduled to join the mega event, it said.

"We have invited many national level leaders, the Governor and the Chief Minister of Odisha to grace the mega function. We have written to leaders like Nitish Kumar, Sharad Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav even though we have not received their consents," minister Damodar Rout said after the press conference.

"In the memory of the late leader, we have also planned to construct a ‘Biju Minaar’ for which the foundation stone will be laid on the occasion," he added.

A souvenir will be unveiled for which writings have been invited from noted writers. A photo exhibition featuring activities of Biju Babu will also be displayed, Rout said. This apart, a short film will also be screened on the life of the late great leader.

"We have also prepared a short telefilm on his speech and visit to various places, which will be screened at the programme", the minister revealed.

Prior to the programme, a mass campaign will be held across Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts. The port town will be decorated lavishly for the purpose.

The Trust has been celebrating Biju Patnaik's birthday remembering his effort in establishment of Paradip port. The foundation stone of Paradip port was laid on January 3, 1962 with the effort of Biju Patnaik.

On the other hand, the State government has decided to launch several programmes to celebrate the birth centenary of the legendary leader throughout the year.

The inter-department coordination committee for the centenary celebration which had met under the chairmanship of Panchayatiraj minister Arun Sahu four days ago, has decided to organize the state level function at the Janata Maidan on March 5, the birthday of Biju Patnaik which is being observed as Panchayat Raj Divas in the state.
