Labourer held for raping tribal woman

Berhampur: A 22-year-old daily labourer was arrested for allegedly raping a tribal woman from Dumuripada in Kandhamal district, police said today.

The rape survivor's plight came to light after a doctor allegedly confined the tribal woman in her home and physically and mentally tortured her, they said.

"We will conduct a medical test on the man who was arrested yesterday. If necessary, a DNA test will also be conducted to ascertain the fact," Kandhamal superintendent of police, K.V. Singh said.

Earlier, police had on sunday arrested the AYUSH doctor, Ambika Mohapatra (45), who worked at a health center at Katringia in Kandhamal on charges of illegal detention and physical and mental torture of the pregnant woman.

The survivor alleged that the doctor made her work as a domestic help at her house at Patrapada near Phulbani and tortured her.
