Nabarangpur: In yet another case of superstitious practice that has proved to be the bane of the district, a 33-day-old girl child was branded with hot iron to cure her of some ailment by a quack at Pujariguda village under Kosagumuda block.

The infant daughter of Laxmi Harijan and Padalam Harijan was branded with the hot iron by the quack, who got a call from the infant’s grandfather, on Monday last week. When her condition deteriorated, the infant was admitted to the district hospital on Tuesday and that is when the matter came to light.

With 10-12 hot iron branding marks on her chest and above the abdomen, the girl child was brought to the hospital in a critical condition by her mother, an ASHA worker and an ANM staff.

"The mother took the baby to the hospital after being persuaded by the ANM. However, the father and grandfather of the child have not visited the hospital yet to see the condition of the baby," said Dharani Ranjan Satapathy, pediatrician of the hospital.

“When we asked the mother for the reason behind branding the hot iron, she said the baby’s grandfather brought the quack as the infant vomited slightly,” Satapathy elaborated.

“The condition of the baby is stable. She is active and is having the breast milk. However, pneumonia and lungs infection symptoms are seen in the infant for which she is undergoing treatment,” Satapathy added.

With this fresh iron branding incident, a total of five cases have been reported in Nabarangpur district alone in the recent past.

A 22-day-old was admitted to the Koraput district hospital in a severe condition after being branded with a hot iron on January 9.
