Banki: A fisherman drowned after his boat capsized at Kalikaprasad ghat of Mahanadi river at Banki in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday morning.

The body of the deceased fisherman, identified as Suresh Behera of Muraripur village under Banki police station limits, was later sent to the sub divisional hospital for post mortem.

Sources said Behera had gone out for fishing in his boat from the Kalikaprasad ghat of the river in the wee hours wearing a shawl.

Later some villagers came to the ghat for a bath and noticed a shawl floating on the water and began a search operation. After an hour-long search, they found the body of Behera. The villagers, after recovering the body, informed the police which rushed to the ghat and sent the body for post mortem to sub divisional hospital.

The cause of the death of the fisherman would be known after the post mortem, police said.

At present, the average depth of the river at Kalikaprasad ghat would be around 15-20 feet, the locals informed.
