Bhubaneswar: Former Directorate General of Police (DGP) Sanjeev Marik filed a defamation suit against former IGP Anadi Sahu in the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court here on Tuesday.
According to reports, Marik filed the case for Rs 50 lakh under Section 500, 501 and 502 of the IPC on grounds that Sahu’s allegations linking him to gangster siblings— Sushil and Sushant Dhalasamant— has tarnished his reputation.
“As there is a provision that one can file a defamation case if somebody brings false allegation, I have lodged a criminal defamation suit against Sahu on the ground of making false allegations that I have a bank account and D-brothers had transferred crores of rupees, which is a blatant lie and baseless.” Marik told media persons.
On the other hand, Sahu said it is good now that I can expose Marik’s all corruptions.
“He can file a case and it will be decided in the court. But he should remember that once he had lodged a complaint against the erstwhile Odia vernacular daily, Prajatantra, around 20 years ago which was dismissed by the court. Considering his reputation, I can say he is a corrupt man and as per the Supreme Court’s decision, a defamation case cannot be filed,” the former IGP claimed.
Section 500 of the IPC deals with punishment for defamation. It states that whoever defames another shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.
Notably, Sahu, who was also a former MP, had claimed before the media that Marik has close links with the Dhalasamant brothers.
Later on February 23, he had further alleged that Marik had received Rs 7 crore from arrested D-brothers. He had also said Rabindra Sethi, a stenographer, used to take care of Marik’s illegal transactions and invest them in various places.
