Subarnapur: Nearly 100 students fell sick after consuming mid-day meal at Kendupali upper primary school under Biramaharajpur block in the district today.

They have been admitted to Biramaharajpur health centre. Doctors have examined most of them. “Only six students, whose condition is stated to be critical, were given therequired medication. Others are stated to be out of danger and will be discharged soon," doctor said.

The students complained of nausea, vomiting and stomach ache soon after taking the meal. The teachers took the matter lightly and fed them with antacid tablets. However, no sign of improvement was seen even after they were administered preliminary treatment. They were later taken to nearest hospital by ambulances.

Palpable tension gripped the school over the incident after irked guardians locked the teachers for a while alleging negligence on their part leading to the incident.

Meanwhile, the sub-collector and local police reached the school and took stock of the situation. The sub-collector also visited the students at the hospital and discussed with the doctors the condition of the sick pupils.

The food samples have been collected and will be examined to ascertain the cause of such incident, the sub-collector said.
