Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Friday directed the SCB Medical College and Hospital to examine whether medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) can be carried out on a minor rape survivor who is at an advanced stage of pregnancy.

The court was hearing a petition filed by a person seeking termination of the pregnancy of his 14-year-old daughter, who is a rape survivor.

A bench comprising Chief Justice S Muralidhar and Justice BP Routray directed the General Superintendent, SCB Medical College and Hospital, to constitute a Board of three medical experts, who will examine the petitioner’s daughter either by this evening or at the latest tomorrow (April 10).

The bench directed the SCB authorities to make necessary arrangements if the medical experts give go-head to the termination of the pregnancy.

“Without awaiting further orders from this Court if they (medical experts) recommend the MTP be carried out, then the General Superintendent, SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack will proceed to arrange for it to take place at thevery earliest considering that the Petitioner’s minor daughter is already in the 23rd week of pregnancy,” the bench said.

The court has posted the next hearing to April 12.
