Bhubaneswar: In a bid to make the capital city open-defecation free, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to impose penalties for open defecation and urination.

While Rs 200 will be charged as penalty for open defecation, a fine of Rs 150 will be imposed for urinating in the open.

According to the official notification of the municipal corporation, a special squad of BMC will be appointed to check open defecation and urination and penalise the violators.

As per sources, there are more than 180 toilets constructed under Swachh Bharat, Amrut and other schemes in BMC jurisdiction. While toilets have been constructed in every 500 metres in Bhubaneswar, 18 e-toilets have been constructed from Jaydev Vihar Chhak to Power House Chhak and from Nicco Park Chhak to Rabindra Mandap Chhak.

There are plans to build 37 e-toilets and bio-toilets within a year in the capital city, informed sources.
