Sambalpur: Though Sambalpuri saree of Odisha is famous not only in India but also across the globe- symbolising the pride of Odia craftsmanship- the online sale of these sarees by e-commerce site Amazon as a product of West Bengal sparked a row in the state.

Resentment brewed across Odisha and many people took to social media to point out the mistake of the company which mentioned in the handloom zone of the ‘Handicrafts Mela’ section of its site that the Sambalpuri sarees belong to West Bengal.

Culture loving people from Western Odisha slammed the company for the error.

“It’s an attack against the culture of Sambalpur and the sentiment of the people. The company’s mistake has certainly hurt the handloom weavers of the state. It wouldn’t have happened in case of other states,” stated hadloom saler Bhakta Prasad Nanda.

“It’s a blunder by the company. It’s the question of Western Odisha’s pride. The company shouldn’t repeat these kinds of mistakes in future,” said another handloom saler Satya Narayan Thakur.

However Amazon admitted to their fault quickly and apologised for the mistake. They also corrected their mistake afterwards.

“Thank you so much for highlighting this! We apologise for the error. Rest assured, the team has already had this updated and you can find the change reflected here,” the company tweeted.
