Odisha's First Cadaveric Organ Transplant: Patient Who Received Organ Discharged From Hospital

Cuttack: It was a milestone for the state and Firoze Sahoo, who walked out of the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack on Monday after being fully treated, bears testimony to such feat. On February 4, Sahoo was one of the patients who received a kidney in the first-ever cadaveric organ transplant in Odisha, from one Priyankarani Patra, a resident of Digapahandi, who was declared as brain dead in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar following an accident.

Priyankarani's parents decided to donate her organs to the needy in honour of her memory and her kidneys were then shifted from the private hospital in Bhubaneswar to SCB hospital in Cuttack where they were successfully transplanted on 2 patients.

Sahoo, who was discharged from the hospital, said "I would like to thank the person who donated the organ. Moreover, I would like to thank all the medical staff involved in the process. If people could come forward and donate their organs, it would be really helpful for needy patients like me."

"I would like to thank Priyankarani for saving my son's life. My son is well now and all credit goes to the donor as well as the doctors and the State Government," said Firoze's mother.

While organ transplants aren’t new to Odisha, a cadaveric transplant which typically means transplantation of an organ from a dead body to another patient is a rare procedure and doctors claimed that Priyankarani Patra’s case was probably the first such successful surgery. As per doctors, though the success rate in cadaveric transplant is lower than the live donor transplant, the procedure has gradually been adopted in many hospitals in view of inadequate live donors.

The successful surgery had received accolades from many quarters including CM Naveen Patnaik. In a tweet Patnaik had hailed the efforts of the doctors and praised the courage of the family of Priyankarani who donated her organs.
