Cuttack: Odisha’s COVID-19 count reached 1,100 in no time and the number is expected to rise to 10,000 by June, informed the technical spokesperson of Odisha Health Department, Jayanta Panda on Thurday.
According to Panda, the spike in COVID-19 cases was anticipated in view of the return of migrants from several hotspot States. “Despite the spurt in COVID-19 cases, there is nothing to panic as all the cases have been reported from quarantine centres, containment zones and patients are being isolated after tests and it is not a sign of stage III," said Panda.
Panda further stated, “If COVID-19 infection will not rise then there will be no herd immunity. For herd immunity, two-thirds of people in a locality or area need to be exposed which is going to happen. The number of COVID-19 cases is likely to cross 10,000 by June.”
Though Odisha has reported seven deaths due to COVID-19, it is not a matter of concern as the casualties were persons with co-morbidities mostly high blood pressure and other issues.
“Deaths due to COVID-19 are not a concern at present as the mortality rate is 0.46% in the State against the national rate of 3.1%. There is no need to panic,” said Panda.
According to Panda, maximum COVID-19 cases and deaths have been reported from Maharashtra. Under the present scenario, we have to learn to live with coronavirus and stay protected by maintaining proper hand hygiene, wearing masks and observing social distancing, he added.
