Nayagarh: In a shocking incident, a woman teacher sustained grievous injuries after a youth allegedly stabbed her with a knife before attempting to kill self by slitting his throat at Godipada under Sarankul police limits in the district on Saturday.

Both the victim and the alleged attacker have been admitted to district headquarters hospital in Nayagarh where they are stated to be critical.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when Lilima Behera, a teacher at Sardar Patel Vidyapeeth was returning to her rented house from the school.

According to eyewitnesses, accused Sukant Behera, a resident of Pattamundai in Kendrapara district came to the school in the afternoon and enquired about Lilima. When the teacher came out of the school at 4 pm, the accused tried to talk to her over some matters. Lilima ignored him and walked straight to her house.

Being irate over her disapproval, Sukant followed her and stabbed from her back when she entered her room, an eyewitness said.

Brother of the teacher said that Sukant came to eliminate his sister. "My sister sustained critical injuries on face and neck. The accused committed the crime in an inebriated condition. The family members of the house owner have also been injured when they prevented the accused from committing such act," he said.

Though the exact reason is yet to be known, love affair is said to be the cause behind the crime.

Sources said, Lilima who is a resident of Brahmagiri in Puri district has been serving as a teacher at the Sardar Patel Vidyapeeth for the last eight years.
