Nuapada: A young farmer attempted suicide by consuming poison in Nuapada district on Friday after allegedly failing to sell his paddy.

The farmer, Romachan Dandasena, from Bhangiamunda in Sinapali consumed poison at his farmland. He was admitted to Khadial hospital in a critical condition.

According to sources, the farmer was upset as he could not sell his produce due to expiry of his token issued by the government.

Due to non-payment of power bill, his electricity connection was also disconnected. As a result, his farmland did not get water from the lift irrigation project and the crops were damaged, alleged the family members of the farmer.

"My husband had grown paddy, but the crop was adversely affected due to snapping of the power connection. After harvesting of the crops, the mandi authority took bribe from my husband with an assurance to procure paddy, but they did not," alleged wife of the farmer, Krishna Dandasena.

"He had taken 84 packets of paddy to the mandi, but could not sell the produce after the validity of the token was expired on February 17. He has grown paddy on 3.5 acres of land, but the electricity department snapped the connection. He was planning to convene media to share his grievances, but consumed poison due to frustration," said a relative of the farmer.
