Bhubaneswar: A senior police official has been suspended for dereliction of duty after a human skeleton was recovered from a seized vehicle parked inside the premises of Janla outpost on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash on Saturday informed that the vehicle was seized by the Ganjam police in a narcotics case in 2019. The seized vehicle was parked on the campus of the Janla police outpost since then. It is however unclear why the vehicle was parked at the outpost located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar instead of Berhampur.

The human skeleton was spotted after a team from the Berhampur police visited the Janla outpost in February this year to release the vehicle.

"Following the detection of the human skeleton, we had sent it to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for autopsy," said Dash.

The Bhubaneswar DCP further said the post-mortem reports ascertained the gender of the skeleton to be of a woman around 45-year-old.

When asked about the possible reason behind her death, Dash said, "As per the post mortem report, the deceased was suffering from tuberculosis and had died of natural causes. We are trying to ascertain the identity of the deceased."

He said the senior official at the outpost has been put under suspension for his failure to detect the incident that occurred within the compound.
