Puri: A dead was once again denied dignity in Odisha and surprisingly this time due to an 18-year-old Kangaroo Court diktat. Srabana Das of Biripada village under Krushnaprasad block of Puri district is yet to cremate the body of her elderly mother who died a couple of days ago.

According to sources, 18 years ago, Srabana’s family was fined a sum of Rs 10 lakh by the village chief in a Kangaroo court. Unable to pay the penalty, Srabana’s family was left with no other option but to leave the village.

However, a few days back the family returned to the village and in an unfortunate turn of events, Srabana’s mother, who was battling old-age ailments, died. Devastated by his mother’s death, Srabana approached the villagers to help him perform the last rites. However, the villagers instead of helping Srabana, reminded him of the penalty that his family had failed to pay 18 years ago.

In further inhumane conduct, the villagers have denied the cementation of the dead body till the time the pending amount is collected. Srabana alleged that he even went to Krushnaprasad Police station, but the police refused to help.

What’s worse is that it’s been two days since a helpless Srabana is waiting with the body of his dead mother to perform the last rites.
