Ganjam: An elderly woman, who was presumed dead by her neighbours and villagers, regained senses just before the lighting of her funeral pyre at Kaniapalli village under Polasara block in Ganjam district today. However, she later died while undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.

The woman Dukhi Behera was reportedly suffering from malnutrition and had not taken food for several days. And hence, she fell unconscious but was presumed to be dead, said sources.

Assuming her dead, Dukhi's relatives and villagers took her to the cremation ground but one of her relatives there realised that she was regaining her senses and examined her pulse.

After confirming that Dukhi was alive, they immediately rang up 108 to call for an ambulance and rushed her to Polasara Hospital where she succumbed while undergoing treatment.

Earlier on October 13, a 55-year-old man who was also assumed dead by his family members woke up while being taken to cremation ground at Kapakhalla village in Ganjam district.
