Odisha Woman Dies During Attempt To Save Husband From Self-Immolation

Pattamundai: A woman died after sustaining severe burn injuries while saving her husband, who attempted self-immolation at Sanajaria village here in Kendrapara district in the early hours of Sunday.

Police identified the deceased as Bandita Mallick while her husband Sailendra Mallick has been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in a critical condition.

As per reports, the couple entered into an argument on Saturday morning over the alleged extramarital affair of Sailendra. After a brief gap, the duo again quarreled over the issue following which Sailendra flew into a rage and set him on fire by pouring kerosene on him.

Bandita desperately tried to douse the fire and in the process, she received severe burn injuries, added reports.

Some neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing the couple's screams and managed to douse the flames. The couple was immediately taken to Pattamundai Sub-Divisional Hospital (SDH).

The doctors at the SDH referred them to SCB Hospital as their health condition deteriorated. However, Bandita succumbed on the way to Cuttack while Sailendra is battling for his life at SCB.

Pattamundai Police has launched an investigation into the case.
