Bhubaneswar: Several parts of Odisha are likely to witness heavy rainfall between August 24 and 26 under the influence of a fresh low pressure which is likely to develop over north-west Bay of Bengal around August 23, said Charana Behera, weather expert at India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar.
“The previous well-marked low pressure area moved westward and now lay centred over central parts of east Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood. A fresh low pressure is likely to develop over north-west Bay of Bengal around August 23,” Behera informed.
“The northern parts of the State are expected to witness heavy rainfall under the influence of the fresh low pressure. Heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm is very likely in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Kendraparda, Jagatsingpur, Keonjhar, Deogarh and Jajpur,” Behera predicted.
Due to steep pressure gradient, strong surface wind reaching 45 to 55 kmph likely to prevail over the Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coast. Keeping this in view, the fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea.
Asked about the amount of rain districts received, Behera said, “Other than 10 districts, the rest experienced normal or a very less deficit rain till yesterday. Some also recorded more than normal. However, Balasore (-23 percent), Bolangir (-13 percent), Gajapati (-17 percent), Kalahandi (-27 percent), Mayurbhanj (-13 percent), Nayagarh (-16 percent), Puri (-18 percent), Sonepur (-15 percent) witnessed rain deficit.
