Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will raise the demand to bring a bill for the establishment of Legislative Council or Vidhan Parishad in Odisha during the Winter session of Parliament which commences tomorrow. A decision in this regard was taken in the all-party meeting held today ahead of the Winter session of the Parliament.

Speaking after the meeting, Leader of BJD Parliamentary Party, Pinaki Mishra said, “BJP, BJD and Congress unanimously passed a resolution for the creation of a legislative council in Odisha. The government should bring a constitutional amendment bill for setting up the legislative body in Odisha. The council will have a reservation for women, SC and ST,” he said.

“The government is also bringing Mines and Minerals Development amendment bill and disaster management bill. I have demanded the government to circulate the bills so that we can study the interest of Odisha and put forth our demands,” the Lok Sabha member from Puri added.

Similarly, BJD MP Sasmit Patra said, “Inclusion of at least two tourist places of Odisha among the 17 identified Iconic Tourist Sites by Centre, introduction of Bhubaneswar-Dubai direct flight, recognition of Bali Yatra as National Maritime Heritage Festival will also be raised during the Winter Session of the Parliament."

“We will also raise demand for income tax exemption from district mineral fund (DMF) and stopping of Polavaram project work,” Patra added.

Sources said the ruling party is also likely to rake up the demand for increasing banking and telecommunication coverage, expansion of National Highways,introduction and passing of Women's Reservation Bill, rollback of CBSE fees hike, release of pending PDS subsidy and inclusion of Cyclone Fani affected districts of Odisha under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Grameen), identification and geo-tagging during the ensuing Winter Session.

On the other hand, the MPs of Opposition BJP from the State are likely to target Odisha's ruling party over issues like death of lady PEO Smitarani Biswal, State government's alleged failures in eradicating cases of malnutrition, negligence in expenditure of Central funds and irrigation woes hitting the agriculture sector.

Similarly, the lone Congress MP from Koraput, Saptagiri Ulaka has informed that he will raise Kunduli and lady PEO Smitarani Biswal issues in the Parliament.
