Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to impart online refresher training and orientation to professors of the State universities.

The professors will receive the training from top Indian universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

State Higher Education department secretary Saswat Mishra has written to the top universities about the proposal.

“We have proposed some of the top universities of the country to tie up with us and provide online teaching to our teachers on the subjects they have expertise. We will provide the training fees to the universities. The teachers of our State will get online refresher course from top Indian universities at their home,” Mishra said.

Refresher training helps professors in the promotion however, they often face difficulties in availing leave of 15-20 days for attending the offline refresher course especially out of the State.

Meanwhile, the joint forum of professors welcomed the decision of the State government.

“The Higher Education secretary has taken a remarkable step. Top universities outside Odisha like JNU, Calcutta University, Andhra University and other universities have been requested to provide orientation and refresher training to professors of universities in the State. The professors will receive online teaching at their home and we hope it will help teachers a lot and also benefit students,” said Golak Nayak, convenor of Professors’ Joint Forum.

“Earlier, teachers had to tour outside to receive orientation course and also face many difficulties. On behalf of our association, I extend thanks to higher education secretary, State government and higher education minister and the Chief Minister,” he said.

“In the first phase, a few subjects are being considered for the course. I request the higher education secretary and minister to include all the remaining subjects in the subsequent phases,” he added.
