Bhubaneswar: Universities in Odisha will soon have a dedicated unit to take care of day-to-day maintenance work of the institute infrastructure and other facilities.

The State government on Wednesday asked the Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation (OPHWC) to consider setting up of a maintenance unit in each of the State Public Universities coming under the Higher Education department.

In a letter, the government directed the OPHWC, which is the sole executing agency of all the infra works of the State public varsities, to appoint enough manpower comprising of electrician, plumber. carpenter, mason, water pump operator-cum-Mechanic, etc in the maintenance unit.

The Maintenance Unit should be housed inside the University campus at a place to be provided by the University concerned. The University shall pay OPHWC for expenses of running the Maintenance Unit which will comprise of manpower cost and material cost, the Higher Education department suggested in its notification.

The State government has expressed that as Universities do now have very large infrastructure with multiple facilities, an one-stop Maintenance Unit by OPHWC for day-to-day routine maintenance will go a long way in proper maintenance of the University infrastructure and facilities.
