Ganjam: At least two people were killed while three more sustained serious injuries in an explosion in a house in Kukudakhandi village under the Berhampur Sadar police station in the district on Monday.

The injured have been admitted to the MKCG Medical in  critical condition. However, the cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained.

According to reports, the explosion took place in the morning hours. The impact of the explosion was so much that while one person died on the spot, four others sustained serious injuries. They were immediately shifted to the hospital. However, doctors declared one of them brought dead.

According to locals, the accident might have occurred due to  stone blasting in a crusher unit in the vicinity of the house or the explosion of a LPG cylinder inside the house.

“It is a very unfortunate and tragic incident. The accident has taken the lives of two innocent persons and three are critically injured. We don’t understand why the government is giving permission to the crusher units in the area despite several complains by local people,” said a villager.

Other villagers demanded that the family of the injured and dead should be compensated by the district administration.

“All the dead and injured persons are day-wage labourers. Their family members will face severe mental and economic crisis following the accident. The district administration should extend a helping hand by providing them with adequate monetary compensation,” said another villager.

Meanwhile, the Berhampur Sadar police reached the spot and started an investigation into the incident.
