Bhubaneswar: With a resurgence in COVID cases across India, Odisha Health Department Director on Friday informed that the State has targeted to vaccinate a minimum of 1 Crore people, around 25% of the total population.

Speaking to the media, Bijay Panigrahi, the Director of Odisha Health Department said that the State has already registered 20.95 Lakh vaccinations till Thursday and has a target of 1.5 Lakh jabs each day.

As far as the stock of the vaccines is concerned, Panigrahi said that there are enough supply available with the department. It will receive another 5 Lakh doses of Covishield vaccines by Friday evening.

"We have an abundant supply of COVAXIN, which we are providing in Bhubaneswar for the time being. The Centre is in contact with us and they are providing us Covishield vaccines as per our requirement," Panigrahi added.

"We are ramping up our vaccination drive in the State. From April 1, 2021, all the persons above 45 years of age will be allowed to get vaccinated. And no medical certificate proving their co-morbid conditions will be required," informed Panigrahi.

Not only the vaccination numbers but the vaccine centers are reportedly being increased as well. The department has plans to increase the number of vaccination centers to 1000 from the present 882.

Meanwhile, the Twin City Police Commissioner Saumendra Priyadarshi has urged the public in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to remain vigilant and keep adhering to COVID appropriate behaviour. He warned that the BMC, CMC and Commissionerate Police have joined hands to enforce the guidelines stringently and anybody found flouting it will be dealt accordingly.

It is pertinent to mention here that, Covid-19 cases continued to surge further in Odisha on Friday when 234 persons tested positive for the infection in the last 24 hours. Nuapada reported the maximum 33 cases followed by Khordha (32), Cuttack (29), Bargarh (24) and Kalahandi (17) cases.
