Bhadrak: In a shocking incident, a stray dog was reportedly seen running away with the corpse of a newborn on the premises of a government hospital in Bhadrak district.

The disturbing incident was reported from the district headquarters hospital here on Monday. The stray dog was seen grabbing the body of the infant in its mouth and running on the hospital campus. When some people present on the hospital gave the dog a chase, it dumped the corpse and fled.

“We saw the dog was holding the body of the newborn girl in its mouth and running on the hospital campus. We gave the dog a chase suspecting that the baby might be alive. The dog then fled leaving the body there,” said an eyewitness.

“If such incidents happen at government hospital, how will we dare to bring our near and dear ones to the hospital for treatment. We have totally lost faith in the hospital,” the eyewitness added.

Though it is yet to be ascertained under which circumstances the newborn’s body reached the hospital, the hospital authorities claimed that it was a premature girl child. Bhadrak Town Police has launched a probe into the matter.

“It looks like a premature foetus. It was lying on the hospital premises for some time. We do not know under what circumstances and from where the body reached the campus. We have informed the police and an internal probe will also be conducted and action will be taken accordingly,” said Bhadrak Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Santosh Kumar Patra.

In a related incident, bodies of two newborn babies were found dumped along roadside at Banarpal in Angul. The police seized the bodies and launched a probe into the matter.
