Puri: Police today arrested six members of a family in connection with the mysterious death of an 18-year-old girl a Talajanga under Chandanpur police limits in the district.

The arrested persons include brother, uncle and cousins of the deceased, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Kishore Mund said.

A fresh case has been registered under Sections 306, 201, 176 and 34 of IPC, he added.

"Prima facie, it appears that the girl had committed suicide on March 20 night and her family members cremated her body hurriedly without informing the police. We have arrested six of her family members and forwarded them to court today," he added.

Mund further said the girl was in a relationship with a youth of the same village and wanted to marry him. But, her family members were opposing their affairs following which she committed suicide, he added.

In a bid to destroy evidence, her family members cremated her in the wee hours of March 21.

After being informed by the villagers about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered some pieces of bones from the cremation site in presence of a magistrate. The bones will be sent for forensic examination, the SDPO added.

Further investigation is underway and follow up action would be taken accordingly.
