Bhubaneswar: In a major development, the State government today issued orders to all private and government schools in Odisha to start classes from tomorrow, i.e. June 21. Considering the changed weather conditions, the government has rescheduled the reopening dates, informed School and Mass Education Department.
Reportedly, the government had extended the vacation of all schools including privately run ones till June 25. As per the previous schedule, the schools were supposed to re-open on June-19, but due to prevailing heat wave conditions, the vacation was extended. But it was rescheduled again today.
"In view of improved weather conditions with the onset of monsoon, the government has been pleased to advance the reopening of the schools to June 21, 2019. Accordingly, the earlier order is modified and all schools in the State shall reopen on June 21, 2019," the department notification mentioned.
The summer vacation which was declared from April 18 in view of intense heat wave lasted for 65 days.
However, this decision has drawn a lot of flak from various quarters.
"If the government has retracted its decision taking into consideration only the weather in Bhubaneswar, then it is wrong as Bolangir continues to reel under intense heat. It will be difficult for children to go schools in such hot conditions," said Rajkumar Barada, President of Bolangir District Primary Teachers Association.
"After the government extended holidays, some teachers have moved out of station or returned to their native places. Similarly, hostel students have left. Moreover, repair work post Fani is still underway. It is very callous on the part of the State government," said Teacher Leader, Golak Nayak.
Defending the decision, School & Mass Education minister, Samir Dash said, "The decision was taken keeping in mind the heat wave. But after we observed a change in the climate and keeping in mind that studies are important for children, we decided to reopen schools from tomorrow. For schools which have not been repaired, adequate arrangements have been made in nearby schools."
