Rayagada: Revealing a state of affairs which would put the education system in Odisha to shame, students of some government schools, among whom some will be appearing for the matric examinations this year, are not even aware of basic general knowledge.

During a visit of Minister Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi to an ashram school in Bhakurguda village of Rayagada, a Class 7 student failed to identify basic components of a computer. The boy was only able to recognise the mouse when the Minister asked him to identify different parts.

However, Panigrahi, who didn’t seem to acknowledge the loopholes, said, “There are facilities in the school, but some improvements are required.”

The situation is no different at D N High School in Keonjhar where some Class 10 students failed to tell names of the current Prime Minister of the country and Chief Minister of Odisha.

However, denying such low degree of general awareness among students, headmaster of the high school, Satyanarayan Mahant said, “We are conducting quiz and debate competitions on several occasions. You must have asked questions to some weaker students who failed to give correct answers.”

While the lack of general knowledge among State government school students has raised question on the quality of education in Odisha, fingers are also being pointed at parents and guardians and their responsibility towards children.
