Malkangiri: To make students aware about the day to day functioning of the government and firsthand knowledge about the different aspects of life, the authorities of Kasturba Gandhi School in Malkangiri have initiated a unique teaching initiative of running a mock Parliament for their students in the institute.

The model Parliament with students calling shots as lawmakers have a prime minister and council of ministers, who discuss about the various issues faced in the school.

The Council of Ministers chooses the Prime Minister, who acts as the head of the Parliament and resolves all the problems. Different responsibilities are allotted to students like distribution of portfolios to ministers.

For instance, a student carrying out the role of health minister is responsible to see if all the students are coming to school in clean uniforms and maintaining hygienic practices.

Likewise, the one dispensing duty as a food minister checks the quality of the mid-day meal and also if the food is given in time. In case where a minister finds any discrepancies, he immediately informs the PM and the principal to take immediate action.

Reportedly, every year the school organises this mock parliament and one of the students is chosen as the Prime Minister. Not only this, the school authorities have also ensured that the walls of the school building are painted with design of Parliament so that students can get real feeling while conducting sessions every month to discusses their problems.

"The mock parliament offers a great platform for students to experience the actual proceedings of the parliament, increase their social responsibilities and channelize their talents," said the Principal of Kasturba Gandhi School.
