Sonepur: Have you ever been to Sonepur? The city is also known as the second Varanasi of India for its cluster of temples. The district headquarters of Subarnapur district has nearly 108 magnificent temples having architectural and tantric importance.

Moreover, the legendary Sashisena temple, which epitomises true love, holds a special relevance on the occasion of Valentine’s Day.

The Sashisena Temple was constructed by Biramitra Singhdeo in 1921 to commemorate the eternal love of Sashisena, the princess of Amaravati and Ahimanikya, the son of the minister of that kingdom.

Legends say Sashisena, the daughter of Amravati King Vikram Keshari, had fallen in love with Ahimanikya. Gyanadei Maluni, a witch had also fallen in love with Ahimanikya. She performed witchcraft to take control over Ahimanikya. She transformed him into a sheep during the day and human at night by using her black magic.

Sashisena prayed Goddess Bhagabati and with her blessings freed Ahimanikya from the witch’s spell. Finally their true love won.

“Commemorating their true love the temple was later built. On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, many love birds and devotees across the State visit the temple to worship the goddess and pay tribute to the true lovers,” said Sudam Charan Naik, a research scholar.

This temple in the State is unique because it has no doors at all. It is also known as ‘Nimuhi’ temple.

“The famous Sashisena Temple now stands in memory of the Tantric practices that once flourished in the district. The temple is also known as an important centre of Sakti practices,” said Padyumna Kumar Sahu, a local resident.
