Khordha: BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra played saviour to a man afflicted with filaria (elephantiasis) by personally admitting him to the AIIMS at Bhubanmeswar) for treatment as he had promised earlier.

Patra was spotted carrying the filarial patient, identified as Santosh Barik of Ankula village from Chilika, by himself in an ambulance before admitting him to the AIIMS on Thursday morning.

Patra also promised him to bear all expenses incurred during the treatment.

The BJP spokesperson said, “While on a public visit to Chilika along with party colleague Prithviraj Harichandan Chilika, I came across Santosh’s parents. They told me that a lot of people had earlier given assurances to help in the treatment of Santosh. But no one actually did. His treatment will continue for about a year. I thank the AIIMS administration and pray Lord Jagannath for his quick recovery,” he said.

It’s worth mentioning here that Santos has been fighting the disease since a long time. But due to the poor financial condition his family could not afford his treatment.

Recently, the struggle of Santos was shared on some social media platforms by one of his relatives which drew Sambit Patra’s attention.

Describing the turn of events, Radhashyam Barik, uncle of Santos Barik, said, “On January 26, myself and my younger brother shared the video on social media platforms which drew the attention of the BJP leader. Moved by the plight of Santosh, Patra personally paid a visit to our village and checked the facts by himself, being himself a trained medical professional. He then promised to take the responsibility of Santosh’s treatment which he has done now.”

“A team of six doctors at AIIMS checked the health condition of Santosh and said it will take around 10 long months to cure him. They will perform five surgeries on him for riding him of the disease,” Radhashyam added.
