Bhubaneswar: The daily COVID-19 cases in Odisha saw a massive jump on Thursday with as many as 12,238 persons testing positive for the infections. This the biggest single-day spike in the State ever since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

Similarly, 19 coronavirus patients undergoing treatment succumbed to the deadly virus in the last 24 hours, data shared by the State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department said.

Today’s surge pushed the State’s Coronavirus positive tally to 5,12,4000. The active cases in the State stood at 86,950 while 4, 23,257 patients have recovered so far.

State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department data said, of the fresh cases spread across 30 districts, 6,914 were detected among people in quarantine and 5,324 were local infections.

The death of 19 more persons in the last 24 hours due to the virus took the total death toll to 2140. Khordha and Sundergarh witnessed maximum four deaths followed by Ganjam and Puri which saw two casualties each.

Similarly, Anugul, Bolangir, Cuttack, Deogarh, Jharsuguda and Kalahandi districts registered one death case each.

As per the data released by the, I & PR Department, Sundergarh recorded the maximum 2073 cases while Khordha with 1828 cases stood in second spot.

Six districts recorded above 400 cases – Cuttack (916), Kalahandi (580), Sambalpur (544), Angul (480), Balasore (437) and Bargarh (475).

Other districts which detected cases over 100 are Bhadrak (381), Balangir (260), Boudh (128), Dhenkanal (142), Ganjam (312), Jagatsinghpur (168), Jajpur (318), Jharsuguda (306), Kendrapada (192), Keonjhar (179), Koraput (130), Mayurbhanj (257), Nawarangpur (282), Nayagarh (194), Nuapada (290), Puri (369), Rayagada (201) and Sonepur (159).

The other districts which detected cases below 100 are Gajapati (91), Malkangiri (60) and Deogarh (60).

The State has so far tested a total 1,04,18,217 samples including 50,799 on Wednesday. Odisha’s positivity rate stands at 4.92 per cent.
