Bhubaneswar: With a single-day spike of 134 new coronavirus infections, Odisha’s COVID-19 tally went up to 3,33,444, while one new fatality took the state's coronavirus death toll to 1,901, a health department official said.

The new cases were detected in 21 of the state's 30 districts, 79 of them reported from different quarantine centres while the remaining 55 are local contact cases.

Sundergarh district recorded the highest of 25 new cases followed by Sambalpur (19) and Puri (16).

Eighteen districts reported new positive cases in single digit, while nine other districts - Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nayagarh, Nabarangpur and Rayagada, did not register any case since Sunday.

The lone fatality reported in the last 24 hours was in Bargarh district, pushing the coronavirus death toll to 1901, he said.

This apart, as many as 53 other COVID-19 positive patients have also died due to comorbidities in the state.

Of the 1,901 fatalities reported so far, Khurda district of which the state capital Bhubaneswar is a part alone accounted for 334 deaths followed by Ganjam (248), Sundergarh (171), Cuttack (140) and Puri (117).

Odisha currently has 1,944 active COVID-19 cases, while 3,29,546 patients have recovered from the highly infectious disease so far.

The state has so far conducted over 74.02 lakh sample tests for COVID-19 including 25,642 on Sunday. Odisha's positivity rate now is 4.5 per cent, the data released by the Health and Family Welfare department said.
