Bhubaneswar: A pregnant newly-wed woman from Balianta area on outskirts of Bhubaneswar died under suspicious circumstances at the Capital Hospital on Tuesday night.

The family members of the deceased woman have alleged that she had been killed by her in-laws over dowry.

The deceased, identified as Suchismita Sahu, was five months pregnant at the time of her death.

As per reports, Suchismita had married one Subir Kumar Muduli of Jajpur district in December, 2019. Both were well educated and doing jobs at Pahala following their marriage.

According to sources, the couple got into a fight last night, following which the woman called up her father and complained about it. After a while, Subir called his in-laws and told them that their daughter was unwell and admitted to the Capital hospital. Hearing this, Suchismita’s parents rushed to the hospital and found their daughter dead.

The father of Suchismita, Prabhat Kumar Sahu alleged that members of her in-laws' family used to torture her physically and mentally by demanding more dowry.

"Recently they forced my daughter to bring Rs 10 lakh from me as they were supposed to buy a land in Cuttack’s CDA area for Rs 18 lakh. She expressed her inability to arrange the amount as our financial condition is not sound," said Prabhat.

"Somehow we could manage only Rs 1.5 lakh and gave the amount to them last week to avoid any friction between the couple. But they (in-laws) were not satisfied with the amount. They killed my daughter by banging her head," he said.

The deceased's  kin alleged that all the family members of Subir are responsible for the murder.

"Subir, his parents and sisters are directly or indirectly involved in the murder," said the deceased's elder brother Priyabrata Sahu.

The family of the deceased have lodged a complaint with the Balianta police accusing the deceased's in-laws for the murder. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
