Cuttack: If you are sharing any objectionable or inflammatory messages on WhatsApp or any other social media platforms beware, as Odisha State CID, Crime Branch will soon set up a social media monitoring cell to track such activities.

The social media monitoring cell will function from the Cyber Police Station building in Bhubaneswar, informed Additional Director General of Police (Crime Branch), Santosh Upadhyay on Tuesday.

“We have procured all the latest tools and the cell will monitor the trends, rumours and other messages. The cell will subsequently guide and alert concerned SPs for necessary action,” said Upadhyay adding that the Cell will start functioning from December.

Senior officials of Crime Branch further informed that soon a Facebook ID of the department will be created to improve public participation. This will act as a platform for people to create awareness as well as tackle several cyber crimes.

“Several people as well IT experts can give suggestions so that cyber crimes can be prevented,” said Upadhyay.

Crime Branch officials informed that there has been a significant rise in the number of cyber crimes in the State. The petition cell is presently getting complaints regarding financial frauds. So far, the Crime Branch has successfully refunded Rs 15 lakh to people who have fallen victims to such financial frauds.
