Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Odisha Police received the special jury award for Community Policing at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) SMART Policing Awards-2018 held in New Delhi today.

Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch, Cuttack, Sarah Sharma received the award on behalf of Odisha Police from Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel.

“Odisha Police has received the award for community policing. The achievement is a result of series of programmes like 'Paree Rath' and other initiatives for marginalised sections, especially to motivate, encourage and empower women," said Sharma.

"The policing awards distributed today will definitely motivate the police forces in country. Nearly 33,000 police personnel have been killed in last 71 years and Police has played a great role in country's internal security. People respect the police but there is a need for modernisation of police force in view new challenges like cyber crime. I have full faith on our police force but they have to earn the trust of the people," said Goel.

It is worthwhile to mention that the Odisha Police had also received the awards in Elderly Safety and Women Safety category in the year 2016.

The Award for best practices in SMART Policing in India was instituted by FICCI to promote initiatives taken by the Police for the safety and security of Indian citizens with an aim to change public perception and build positive and progressive image of the police among people.

Entries for various categories had been received from 19 State Police Forces and three Central Armed Police Forces, including Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), informed sources.
