Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a world-class hockey stadium in Rourkela and announced several other projects worth Rs 5,000 crore eyeing a total transformation of Sundergarh district.

Though the State government claimed that such welfare projects will benefit people and improve infrastructure and facilities in the district, major opposition parties including the BJP and Congress hold different views.

While the BJP took a jibe at the ruling BJD by stating that such announcements do not hold ground as several such foundation stones had been laid for several projects in the past 21 years, the Congress marked the day as ‘Betrayal Day’.

It is pertinent to mention here that around 80 MLAs, 17 ministers and other leaders of the BJD were camping in Rourkela ahead of the Chief Minister’s tour today. It is said that today’s event was part of BJD’s strategy to strengthen base in Western Odisha.

The Opposition parties raised serious doubts over the fate of the new projects as the old projects are yet to see the light of the day in Sundergarh district.

BJP leder Lekhashree Samantsinghar said, “Announcing or laying foundation stone for any project means nothing. There are several projects and foundation stones which are gathering dust during the past 21 years in the State.”

Sundergarh MP Jual Oram said that such single-day events by the BJD will not have any impact as tribals of the region have been neglected for long.

Earlier, over 150 activists of the BJP were rounded up by the police for staging protests ahead of the CM’s visit near Jubuli park in Rourkela. Similarly, 20 Congress activists, who were also staging a demonstration under district president George Tirkey, were also taken into preventive custody.
