Bhubaneswar: Notorious cannabis (ganja) trafficker Sunil Pandi from Ganjam district who had recently been nabbed by the Surat Crime Branch from his native village will be forwarded to a court in Gujarat today.

Acting on a tip-off and with help from mobile tracking, a team from the Gujarat police had conducted a raid at Sachina Village in Ganjam district and nabbed the drug kingpin.

According to police sources, Pandi is involved in multiple offences of supplying ganja to traffickers since the past 10 years. However, he has been arrested for the first time. Pandi is one of the few drug kingpins from Odisha who is involved in the business of distribution of the contraband in different parts of the country.

Pandi has been running the drug racket with his elder brother Anil. Both of them are involved in supplying ganja to Surat and many parts in Odisha.

"Pandi used to purchase ganja from farmers in Odisha, arrange transport and deliver it to suppliers," said a police official.

"Earlier, the brothers used to send ganja by trains, but in the last couple of years they started sending the contraband consignments in trucks," he added.

Pandi was wanted in two offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

"It is a major success for the city police. We will continue our drive to arrest all those including Pandi's brother Anil, who are involved in smuggling drugs into the city,” said the commissioner of Surat Police.
