Bhubaneswar: Body of Odisha mountaineer Kalpana Das, who died above the balcony area on Mount Everest while descending from the summit on May 23, was brought to Kathmandu today.

Sherpas had successfully brought Kalpana’s mortal remains to the base camp yesterday night from the spot where she died. However, her body could not be air-lifted due to bad weather following which the Sherpas team brought the body to the base of Mt. Everest. The body was shifted to Kathmandu after completion of necessary official procedures today, informed sources.

Sources said that the process to bring Kalpana’s body back to Odisha is likely to be delayed by at least two more days. After post-mortem, her body will be handed over to the three-member team from Odisha which is in Kathmandu.
After necessary paper works, her body will be handed over to the team which is also accompanied by Kalpana’s family members.

The 53-year-old mountaineer from Odisha’s Dhenkanal district died while descending from Mount Everest on May 23. She was the first woman mountaineer from the State to scale the Mount Everest when she reached its summit on May 21, 2008.
